Colonel Gilbert Daniel Whittaker, CD

Colonel Dan Whittaker was born on November 5, 1961 in Woodstock, New Brunswick. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1980 and following trades qualification in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia and Petawawa, Ontario, became a Private with the 2nd Battalion The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) in Gagetown, New Brunswick. As a Non-Commissioned Member (NCM) Dan served with 2 RCR, 3 RCR, The RCR Battle School, Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School and had one operational deployment to Cyprus with 3 RCR in 1986. Dan commissioned from the ranks in 1998 and as a commissioned officer served with 3 RCR (Pl Comd, Transport Officer, Coy 2IC, Asst Ops O, Training O), Land Forces Central Area Training Centre (OC Leadership Company), 38 Canadian Brigade Group HQ (G3 Ops, G3), Land Forces Western Area Domestic Operations (Detachment Commander). As a commissioned officer, Dan had two operational deployments with 3 RCR (1998/99 & 2001), both in the Former Yugoslavia. Dan retired from the Regular Force in 2009 and began working at the University of Manitoba as the Military Liaison Officer. He also joined the Reserve Force in 2009 with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, 38 CBG. In December 2009 Dan became the Commanding Officer of The Roya Regina Rifles, North Saskatchewan Regiment and 46 Engineer Squadron. Dan’s last appointment prior to his retirement 1n 2013 was Brigade Commander, 38 CBG. Dan and his wife Kristin remained in Winnipeg after retiring to be close to their adult children (Catrina, Stephanie, KJ, Dan and Emily) and their five grandchildren.
