Warrant Officer Douglas S. Steele

Doug was born in Treherne, Manitoba on June 28, 1926 to Jack and Jean Steele. He went to school in Treherne, and joined the Army in June of 1944. He was a member the 1ST Canadian Parachute Battalion. To start the 6th Victory Loan on April 27, 1944 Doug parachuted into Treherne his home town. While training in England he had the good fortune of meeting his father in London to celebrate his 18th birthday. His father Jack was a WW1 & WW2 veteran. On March 24, 1945 he participated in Operation Varsity in which the Canadians parachuted onto Germany. Germany surrendered 7 weeks later.

After the war he joined the RCASC and was posted to many bases in Canada including Churchill, Edmonton, Whitehouse, Vancouver, back to Edmonton, on to Germany and lastly Halifax. In 1952 he was sent to join the Korean War where he acted as Warrant Officer. He moved to Winnipeg in 1969 when he retired. Doug was the President of both the Charleswood Legion and the Charleswood Curling Club. He organized many Legion Golf Tournament trips in Canada and the United States. He passed away in 2009.
