Private Robert John Henry Sararas

Robert Sararas was born Feb. 5th, 1918 to Nathanial (Dan) and Elsie (Craig) on the farm in Two Creeks, MB. He was part of a family of 8 children. He worked as a farm laborer, until he left to join the army on Jan. 10th, 1941. He tried to sign up in Virden, Mb but was refused, so he took the train to Winnipeg and signed up with the 2ns Battalion Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He was sent to Wainwright, AB for training. The battalion returned to Winnipeg and then shipped to England for more training. He spent time in the central Mediterranean and then onto Continental Europe ending in Holland. When peace was declared, he signed up to stay in Holland to help with reconstruction. He was honourably discharged on Mar. 29th, 1946. For his service he received: the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defense Medal and the Canadian Service Medal and clasp.

While he served in Holland he met Cornelia Jas. He had to leave her behind but returned a year later. Robert and Corrie married on Feb. 15th, 1947. He was the first Canadain soldier to return and marry in that church. Corrie came back to Canada with Bob and they remained there for the rest of their lives. On Feb. 28th, 1950 their son Harold was born. Bob worked in Virden, MB at the Gordon Hotel until his retirement in 1977. He passed away in Virden on Jan. 1st, 2000 at age 82. He had been a member of the Virden Legion for 51 years.
