Les enlisted in the RCAF on May 10, 1940 in Winnipeg, MB. He was attached to squadrons 113, 424 and 434. Les served as an air frame technician and attended 13th Entry Tech School in St Thomas, Ontario and then completed his Dartmouth, NS.

On the deployment ship, The Empress of Scotland, Les made copious comments on the meals served on board ship as well as general conditions. Apparently stewed apricots were included with almost every meal.

Upon arrival in Algiers, Les joined the 424 squadron, known as the RCAF’s 23rd – sixth Bomber squadron. The unit flew Wellington, Halifax and Lancaster aircraft on strategic and tactical bombing operations.

Les remained in England to assist in bringing Canadian troops from Italy to England. He returned to Canada in June 1945.

He received the following medals for his service: the War Medal, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp.
