Captain William A Johnston

Dad was born and raised in Winnipeg. Prior to the war he was an insurance adjuster. 1939 he joined the militia. In 1941 he was attached to the Fort Garry Horse (Active Force) as a 2Lt from the A8 Armored Corps Training Centre, Camp Borden. The unit name was changed to 10th Canadian Armoured Regiment, Fort Garry Horse. He was confirmed in rank of Lieutenant February 13, 1941.

July 9, 1943 He was promoted to Captain. He was part of the Headquarters company during D-Day but June 29 1944 he embarked from England and July 1 1944 he disembarked in Normandy. He served with the Fort Garry Horse until May 8, 1945 when the war ended. On August 2 1945 he was repatriated to Canada.

Dad married our mother Alma Burgess in Winnipeg June 1941 and he left her and a 4 month old daughter (Shirley) when he went overseas. After returning he had three more daughters (Louise, Judy and Jacqueline Anne). He owned W.A. Johnston Insurance Adjusters for many years until his death in 1968 at 54 years of age.
