Gunner William Hay

William (Bill) Hay was born and raised in Transcona. In 1942, he gave up a promising Canadian Professional Hockey League career to serve his country in the Second World War. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, and N.W. Europe. Bill was fully trained and empoyed as an anti-tank artillery gunner. He served in the Royal Canadian Infantry 3rd Division, 52nd Anti-Tank Battery Division.

While serving in Europe he was on a hockey team and allowed duty passes to play hockey, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

In January of 1946, Bill was discharged from service due to war injury. Upon returning home he was secured employment with the Canadian National Railway.

He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Transcona branch #7. Bill passed away on October 29, 1981, at the age of 58, and is buried in Transcona Cemetery (Military Section).
