Donald Gillies was born in May 22, 1920, the son of James Michael and Margueritte Isabelle “Maud” Gillies, hailing from Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan. He was the beloved brother of my grandmother, Marion, who cherished and missed him throughout her life. He was my great uncle. He attended Blaine Lake elementary School and Collegiate. He left school after Grade 10 to work in the Hollnor Gold Mine.
He enlisted in the RCAF in Feb. 1942 and after training in several locations was shipped overseas in Feb 1943. He was posted to the 19th OTU Bomber Squadron. Tragically, he died in a plane accident while training, along with the rest of his crew July 1943, at the young age of 23. He sacrificed his life for the freedoms we enjoy today.
He is buried at Kinloss Abbey Burial Ground in Moray, United Kingdom, where his final resting place is marked by Grave Reference 61, Row C. His legacy as a devoted Canadian and a brave soldier who gave his life for his country lives on through his family and the many who honor his memory.

May he always be remembered for his courage, pride, and ultimate sacrifice.
